Philip and Trix’ visit in Bangalore
Young Ravi.
While in Bangalore we heard that a 7 year old boy had been hit by a lorry in the rural areas 300 km away. In agony, he was transported to the city. His left leg was totally smashed to the hip and his genitals crushed. We contacted the newspaper and they sent us to the hospital. We met the surgeons and social workers. They told us that the leg had to be amputated and he would need several prosthetic legs during his growing years. The cost of the surgery was equal to 20 years of his labourer father's gross income.
We committed to pay for all Ravi's surgery and medical bills. His brother, aged 15, when this was translated for him, broke down in tears.
We have since received a message from the surgeon saying that the amputation has been successful and the long rehab process will begin. This is only a part solution. It is highly unlikely that Ravi will be able to survive in his village because the family cannot afford to feed him if he can't work. Most likely, he would be forced into begging on the streets. So we are investigating ways for him to go into a children's home we support in the city where he can receive rehab and an education.
